Southlands High School Food Technology
Food Technology Classroom Renovation
Following the successful delivery of an exceptional new Arts and Science block for Southlands High School, Innova Design Group was invited to return and breathe new life into a section of the original 1950s building.
The project focused on transforming an outdated Food Technology classroom into modern, state-of-the-art learning spaces designed to inspire and endure for years to come.
The brief emphasised the need for a contemporary environment that could support innovative teaching methods while meeting the practical demands of a busy curriculum.

The brief
The old Food Technology rooms at Southlands High School had become outdated and overcrowded, unable to keep up with the growing number of students. As part of an ambitious redevelopment program, the school enlisted Innova to design and deliver two modern, functional, and inspiring Food Technology rooms, along with a dedicated learning resource space.
The brief called for spaces that would not only ignite students’ creativity and enthusiasm for cooking but also be practical, easy to maintain, and built to last. High-quality, durable surfaces were a priority to ensure the rooms could withstand daily use while maintaining their polished appearance.
Southlands High School emphasised the importance of an optimised room layout to meet the diverse needs of their Food Technology curriculum. The design needed to include dedicated practical cooking areas where students could engage hands-on with culinary techniques, a fully equipped teacher’s demonstration zone to facilitate live instruction, and adaptable spaces for written and theoretical work.

The solution
After carefully considering the needs of students and teachers, Innova’s team designed a peninsular bay layout, enabling the class to be divided into smaller groups for practical work.
To enhance visibility and interaction, a prominent central demonstration area was created, enabling clear communication between the teacher and students during live demonstrations.
Ample storage options were incorporated into the design to accommodate food, equipment, and materials, ensuring the room remained organised and clutter-free.
To ensure the space would be adaptable for future use, a neutral colour scheme was chosen for the fixed furniture, complemented by a bold green accent wall that added a modern, stimulating atmosphere
All materials were carefully selected for their exceptional quality, durability, and ease of maintenance. Velstone, a seamless and non-porous material, was chosen for the worktops, providing a hygienic, modern, and visually appealing surface that would stand the test of time in a busy classroom setting.
Once Southlands High School approved our 2D and 3D designs, Innova’s in-house manufacturing facility began bringing the concepts to life. Our skilled installers worked closely with the contractor to fit out the Food Technology rooms during term time, ensuring minimal disruption to students and staff.
