The re-development has not only enhanced the physical environment but also contributed to the school’s record-breaking results.

The brief
As part of a new-build development programme, Southlands High School worked closely with Innova and the main contractor to create modern, cutting-edge workspaces for the sciences, technology, and ICT departments.
The goal was to design flexible, efficient teaching environments that would support both practical experiments and written work, ensuring the spaces promoted high levels of interactivity and engagement in learning.
Innova brief was to deliver high-quality, durable interiors, including six state-of-the-art laboratories, a prep room, an auditorium, an IT suite, and a reception area that not only stand the test of time but also inspire both students and staff alike.
This project has completely reshaped the learning environments at Southlands High School, enhancing the functionality of the spaces while creating a more inspiring and conducive atmosphere for both teaching and learning.

The Solution
The modern 21st century science block, complete with six laboratories, prep room, auditorium, IT suite and reception was designed, manufactured and installed by Innova Design Group to maximise learning and productivity.

Science
Innova’s unique ‘Hot Corners’ layout provided a flexible learning environment that combines a working classroom and practical laboratory within the same space.
Unlike the traditional long and narrow classrooms, the ‘Hot Corner’ concept relocates the teacher to the long wall of the room, creating shorter lines of communication, a more collaborative approach to learning with efficient circulation throughout the room.
Velstone, a solid surface, fabricated by Innova, was used to create modern, durable work surfaces. Touches of petrol coloured laminate and flashes of aluminium added to the ambience. Innova delivered striking new laboratories that were both practical and inspirational.
ICT Suite
The IT room was thoughtfully designed with “saw tooth” benching, a layout that optimises the user’s workspace whilst ensuring the room was easy for the teacher to manage
In response to Southlands’ request for additional furniture to support theory work, Innova introduced its unique “doughnut design.” This innovative layout featured a central space dedicated to group work and student interaction, fostering collaboration and communication.
Auditorium
Developed to maximise comfort and optimise audience concentration. The stylish auditorium now accommodates 59 students with an integrated writing tablet at each seat. Plinth lights on the central benching and tiers completes the look
Since completion the school has seen a 30% increase in pupil numbers, despite falling rolls locally, with record results for the whole school in 2012 and it’s best ever science results in 2013!
