Southam College, an outstanding school located in the heart of Warwickshire, is renowned for its strong academic reputation and its commitment to providing a high standard of education.
With over 1,375 students on roll, the school continues to grow and attract new pupils. To meet the demands of its expanding student body, the school recognised the need to enhance its science provision.
In particular, the college planned to add a new, state-of-the-art science laboratory, ensuring that students could benefit from the very best facilities to support their learning and practical science experiences. This addition was part of the school’s ongoing commitment to offering students an exceptional education with modern, well-equipped resources.

The brief
Innova’s brief was to convert a standard classroom into a fully functional, modern laboratory designed to accommodate 32 students. Southam College needed a versatile and well-designed space that could support a range of activities, from practical experiments to theory work and form sessions.
Key challenges included maximising storage, maintaining clear sightlines across the room, enabling the teacher to navigate the space with ease and installing durable, high-quality furniture that could withstand everyday use.
The ultimate aim was to provide a flexible, engaging environment that would enrich both teaching and learning experiences.

The solution
Collaborating closely with the school, Innova designed and delivered a dynamic and engaging laboratory tailored to the needs of both teachers and students. The lab accommodates both practical experiments and theoretical lessons, featuring a ‘Hot Corner’ design that provides an optimal workspace.
The layout prioritises short lines of communication, enabling the teacher to manage the space effortlessly. To ensure the lab’s longevity and durability, hard-wearing, low-maintenance solid surface worktops were installed, creating a robust and enduring environment.
A teacher’s desk, fully equipped with gas, water, and electrical connections, was installed to provide an ideal setup for demonstrating experiments effectively.

Storage was integrated into the design, providing secure and efficient housing for essential lab equipment, such as Bunsen burners and clamp stands. To maximise comfort and encourage good posture, ergonomic stools were provided for students.
The unique and thoughtful design of the laboratory received high praise from both students and staff, with everyone impressed by its functionality, aesthetics, and suitability for modern science education.
