The brief
The construction of a new, purpose-built specialist facility for STEM subjects, costing £4.5 million, began in 2016 and was completed in early 2017. The primary aim of this state-of-the-art facility was to provide students with a learning environment that is grounded in real-world applications. By incorporating hands-on projects and work experience opportunities, the new facility is designed to help students develop the practical skills and knowledge that are highly sought after by employers in fields such as bioscience, engineering, computing, and maths.
As part of the development, Innova Design Group was appointed by Steer Design and Kier Construction to design, manufacture, and install flexible, cutting-edge laboratories and IT suite. These state-of-the-art facilities provide students with a high-quality learning experience, equipping them with the skills needed for success in the rapidly evolving STEM sectors.

The solution
Working in partnership with Kier Construction and Steer Design, Innova delivered a furniture only installation to four laboratories, two engineering rooms and an ICT suite.
Given the school’s requirement for flexible layouts, Innova focused on smart space planning and design for the Genetics, Micropropagation, and Physics labs.
A combination of fixed benching, service pods housing electrics and gas, and movable tables were installed to optimise circulation and allow easy reconfiguration of the rooms. This design enables the new interiors to accommodate both group and independent work, as well as practical study, ensuring adaptability for various teaching and learning activities.
Perimeter storage was a key feature in the classroom design as it allows equipment and glassware to be stored quickly, ensuring surfaces can be kept clean and clutter free minimising any distractions.
Hardwearing, durable Trespa work-surfaces were specified throughout to ensure the labs will serve students and teachers well into the future.
The studio school is confident that the new state-of-the-art facilities will attract more students to study STEM subjects and better prepare them for fulfilling a career in an engineering related field.
