Manchester High School for Girls – Laboratory Refurbishment
Physics & Bilogy Laboratory Refurbishment
Founded in 1874, Manchester High School for Girls is a prestigious independent school that educates approximately 900 girls aged 4 to 18. Renowned as one of the top girls’ schools in the UK, Manchester High has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and innovation.
As part of their commitment to maintaining high standards, the school embarked on a project to modernise two of their science laboratories. The goal was to create cutting-edge facilities that would inspire students and reinforce the school’s legacy of delivering exceptional outstanding education in the sciences.
For the first time in its 141-year history, Manchester High, which had traditionally relied on multi-purpose labs for physics, biology, and chemistry, aimed to establish dedicated flagship laboratories for each individual science discipline.

The brief
Recognising the need to adapt to modern teaching methods, Manchester High set out to transform its biology and Physics Laboratories. The goal was to overhaul the science department and provide a cutting-edge environment that would inspire and support the school’s aspiring scientists.
The outdated labs no longer met the demands of the evolving curriculum or the dynamic nature of contemporary teaching practices. With benches arranged in rows and some students facing away from the teacher, the layout limited visibility and movement, making even basic experiments challenging to execute.
Innova’s task was to design a state-of-the-art Physics and Biology labs that would serve as the heart of the science department and a true reflection of the school’s commitment to ambition and excellence.

The solution
From out-dated to state-of-the-art, Innova worked closely with staff at the school to create contemporary laboratories which really work for students and teachers – maximising space, improving circulation and increasing flexibility for practical work.
We provided a full turnkey solution, including design, manufacture and installation of all furniture as well as M&E works and flooring.
The biology laboratory was designed with a curved centre floor layout to allow students to sit comfortably and safely when conducting both written and practical work. With gas and electricity located on the front face of the desks, the layout maximises desk space, allowing sufficient room for both practical and theory lessons.
The physics laboratory was designed with science pods and movable tables to enabling students to work in groups. The tables to be rearranged around fixed service units to accommodate various activities.
With the curriculum now emphasising practical skills assessment, this adaptable layout supports both formal assessment as well as collaboration and investigative work.
