Ebbw Vale Library

Ebbw Vale Library receives 21st Century Upgrade

Ebbw Vale Library, part of Aneurin Leisure, is housed in the historic stone-built Bethcar Methodist Chapel.

Aneurin Leisure Trust was founded in 2014 as a charitable organisation to manage leisure, learning, and cultural services throughout Blaenau Gwent.  As a not-for-profit entity, every penny spent on their venues or services is reinvested back into the organisation, ensuring the continued provision of high-quality facilities and services across the region.
With funding from a Welsh Government Grant aimed at transforming libraries into vibrant community hubs, Ebbw Vale Library is the last of the six libraries managed by Aneurin Leisure in Blaenau Gwent to be refurbished.
The Community Hubs, run by Blaenau Gwent Council, offer residents easy access to essential services through their local town centre libraries.

The brief

Blaenau Gwent Council aimed to modernise the space at Ebbw Vale Library while preserving the traditional character of the historic building in the town’s heart.
The outdated layout, with PCs cramped into limited spaces and old library shelving, no longer met the community’s needs. The council wanted to create a welcoming, “reader-friendly” environment that could cater to a diverse range of customers, including families, IT users, and the elderly.
Innova secured a competitive tender with a creative design and layout that addressed the library’s goals of maximising space, boosting usage, and improving the performance of its collection.
The refurbishment will transform service delivery at Ebbw Vale, enabling greater community involvement, improved IT facilities and providing an opportunity to increase our partnership work with a wide range of organisations.

The solution

Through collaboration with architects and librarians, the upgrade of the late Victorian building successfully blends cutting-edge technology, advanced IT systems, and custom-designed library furniture with the space’s traditional features, all while respecting its historical character.
In addition to the modern digital services, the library’s refreshed, spacious layout now accommodates a variety of community activities, including art classes and children’s events, creating a versatile and welcoming environment.

“This refurbishment has the “Wow” factor in spades. The building is now a modern, contemporary light filled space which is perfect for a library, whilst still retaining the architectural features that make this building such a landmark in the town.”

Library Visitor
Upon entry to the refurbished library – a central feature ‘rotunda’ entices visitors to browse, sit and read.  On the ground floor, technology has been integrated seamlessly with dual functioning units incorporating IT hot desks on one side with book shelving on the other. This maximises central space and replaces tightly packed and dated shelving units that left little room for browsers.
The mezzanine first floor now offers a traditional reading environment with ample study facilities and the flexibility for staff to reconfigure the space for events.
The finished facility provides ample space and gives readers a relaxed, uncluttered, high tech environment where they can move effortlessly from one area to the next according to their needs. Ebbw Vale Library is now a valuable, multipurpose space that will engage the community and act as its hub long into the future.
