The Derby High School- Science Laboratory
New Cutting-Edge Science Laboratories
Derby High School in Bury, established in 2003 as one of the UK’s first Science and Arts Colleges, has consistently demonstrated excellence in education.
In 2013, the school received prestigious recognition at the TES Annual Awards, winning both the Excellence in Science and Creativity in the Arts prizes. With science at the core of its curriculum and student outcomes steadily improving, the school has launched a fundraising initiative to collaborate with current and new partners. This effort aims to transform three outdated 1950s science laboratories into state-of-the-art learning spaces, promoting innovation and supporting the next generation of scientists.

The brief
In the pursuit of creating inspiring learning spaces, Derby High School recognised the need to update their aging and worn-out classrooms into modern laboratory facilities that could serve students for many years to come. The existing science laboratories, which had been in use since the 1950s, presented significant challenges that hindered the delivery of an optimal learning experience.
One major issue was the outdated positioning of utilities, such as gas and water services, which restricted flexibility and made it difficult to adapt the spaces to suit contemporary teaching methods. Additionally, the fixed layout of tables and workstations was not conducive to collaborative or hands-on learning, limiting students’ ability to fully engage in practical experiments.
The school’s vision was clear: to create cutting-edge laboratories that would inspire curiosity, support modern pedagogical approaches, and provide an environment where students could thrive in their scientific studies.
Overcoming these challenges required a significant investment and partnership with donors, stakeholders, and the wider community to bring this ambitious project to life.

The solution
With careful planning and consultation, Innova delivered three cutting-edge laboratories providing a furniture and installation service.
A modern, light, and spacious feel was achieved through a contemporary design, utilising Innova’s innovative Hot Corner layout across all three classrooms. This unique design integrates the functionality of a theory-based classroom with the practical requirements of a laboratory, creating a versatile dual-purpose space.
Beyond functionality, the Hot Corners layout enhances circulation, improves classroom management, and provides a flexible configuration ideally suited to today’s dynamic learning environments.
The new demo desk equips the teacher with the perfect platform for demonstrations to take place – improving the whole practical experience.
Perimeter storage was a key feature in the designs of the classroom as it provided extra space to store equipment and glassware – freeing up valuable desk space and minimising distractions.

High quality Trespa work tops were used to guarantee a timeless feel, as well as provide durable, low maintenance surfaces throughout.
After a lengthy process spanning five years—from the school’s initial inquiry to securing funding for the laboratory upgrades—Innova emerged as the preferred choice. The decision was driven by the innovative designs and strategic placement of utilities, which not only enhanced functionality but also created a striking “wow” factor that captivated students.
