University Technical College Lancashire – Science Lab Refurb

New Build Science Laboratories

University Technical College Lancashire, located in Burnley, opened its doors in August 2013, with a mission to bridge the gap between education and the workplace for students aged 14 to 19.

The college focuses on delivering high-quality technical training, preparing students for careers in industries that require specialised skills.  To support this forward-thinking educational approach, UTC Lancashire required facilities that matched its innovative curriculum.
The grade II listed building, earmarked for redevelopment, needed a complete renovation to provide the modern, state-of-the-art spaces essential for cutting-edge learning and technical education.

The brief

In collaboration with a fit-out consultancy, Innova was tasked with transforming the science laboratories, engineering, and ICT suites at UTC Lancashire. The primary objective was to design and create modern, inspiring, and versatile learning spaces that fully optimised the available space. This involved carefully considering the needs of both staff and students, as well as aligning with the demands of the curriculum.
The new facilities aimed to foster a dynamic and collaborative learning environment, where students could engage in hands-on, practical learning experiences that bridge the gap between education and the workplace. Modern technologies, flexible layouts, and state-of-the-art equipment were incorporated to support a variety of teaching and learning methods, including project-based and independent study.
The new science, engineering, and ICT suites combine functionality with aesthetic appeal, meeting curriculum needs while inspiring and enhancing learning. This state-of-the-art facility supports academic and technical training, preparing students for successful industry careers.

The solution

The successful blend of contemporary furniture and the original features of the Grade II listed cotton mill, such as its chimneys and exposed brickwork, has created a truly iconic learning environment. This fusion of old and new is designed to inspire the future generation of learners, offering a space that reflects both innovation and heritage.
Innova designed, manufactured and installed an electronics laboratory, prep room, and five state-of-the-art science laboratories, equipped with teacher walls, ICT workstations, and demonstration areas, carefully integrated to complement the mill’s original architecture. The spaces were designed to support a wide range of teaching styles, from classroom lectures to group collaboration, practical work, and theoretical studies.
The installation of multi-functional central science hubs with sawtooth benching and flexible tables for group work created a professional and adaptable space, aligning with the UTC’s vision of a ‘workplace for learning.’ These areas provide students with the necessary environment to engage in real-world, industry-relevant activities while maintaining an academic atmosphere.
Laboratories were designed with Hot Corners and pod-style benching to facilitate more efficient experimentation. The pod layout enhances movement within the space, promoting easy circulation, while also offering secure, organised storage solutions for equipment.
Innova has equipped the science rooms at UTC Lancashire to support a future-focused approach to education. The Grade II listed cotton mill has been completely transformed into a modern, 21st-century learning environment, tailored to the needs of the North West’s first University Technical College, ensuring that students are prepared for the challenges of tomorrow’s industries.
