CONTACT & MORE
In October 2020, AlphaBiolabs introduced a rapid coronavirus testing kit for UK businesses, capable of delivering results within 15 minutes by detecting the presence of the Covid-19 antigen from a nose and throat swab. The test could detect the virus both after the onset of symptoms and from 14 days following initial exposure. As demand for Covid-19 testing surged across the UK, AlphaBiolabs responded swiftly by scaling up their laboratory facilities to accommodate the expanding market need.
The brief
AlphaBiolabs engaged Innova during October 2020 to design and build state-of-the-art PCR and Extraction laboratories, complete with dedicated office space, on the first floor of a newly acquired facility. With the lease secured and tight deadlines in place, AlphaBiolabs set a clear goal, to establish fully operational laboratories and office space in their new unit within just four weeks.
Innova was commissioned to develop flexible laboratory layouts that could accommodate multiple workflows while remaining adaptable for future expansion.
The design also needed to ensure that the unit could be restored to its original condition, providing both functionality and flexibility over the lease term. From concept design through to full turnkey installation, every phase of the project was executed with a focus on speed, accuracy, and operational efficiency.
The solution
Innova provided a fully integrated solution, including M&E works and the design, manufacture, and installation of custom furniture. Our professionals managed all aspects, ensuring seamless integration of electrical systems, HVAC, plumbing, and tailored furniture to meet both functional and aesthetic needs.
Construction Phase
Demolition and strip out:
Complete strip-out and demolition carried out with careful planning to ensure safety, efficiency, and fit-out readiness. Key steps included utility isolation, structural protection, and strict compliance with health and safety regulations.
Minor building works:
Stud walls were installed between Lab 1 and Lab 2 up to the soffit, with voids sealed using ablative foam. Partial glazed partitions were added between Lab 2 and the offices, extending above the suspended ceiling. Three fire doors (two doubles, one single with vision panel) were fitted, along with new skirting, architraves, and ceiling plinths.
VAV systems to two laboratories:
Innova’s engineers delivered a complete HVAC solution by installing Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems in both laboratories, optimising temperature regulation, airflow, and energy efficiency based on real-time occupancy and activity levels.
Bulkheads in the office and extraction lab were designed to house the VAV components, while the installation of suspended ceilings offered a clean aesthetic finish and easy access for ongoing maintenance.
Electrical works & LED lighting:
We supplied and installed comprehensive electrical containment, including sockets and a new main distribution board. In addition, 31 LED panels and 9 emergency lights were fitted to ensure efficient lighting and safety across the facility.
Heating, plumbing and drainage:
With careful planning water heaters and pumps were installed with, secure mounting, and proper plumbing connections, including water lines, electrical/gas hookups, and safety valves. Pumps were connected with the right piping and wiring for optimal flow and pressure. Thorough testing was performed to check for leaks and functionality.Additionally, new water supply and drainage systems were installed for the handwash stations in each lab.
New flooring:
The existing flooring was removed from the labs and office, with Polyflor vinyl installed in the labs and carpet tiles laid in the office area.
Site testing and commissioning:
Comprehensive site testing and commissioning for the VAV system, electrical, and plumbing ensured proper functionality and compliance. The VAV system was tested for airflow, temperature control, and pressure. Electrical systems were checked for correct voltage, grounding, and safe operation. Plumbing was inspected for leaks, pressure balance, and flow. Adjustments were made to ensure optimal performance and safety prior to handover.
Laboratory Interiors Built with Quality and Style
Working closely with the client, Innova’s designer developed a C-frame peninsular layout for both the Extraction and PCR labs providing large workspaces for the technical staff to carry out their practical activities with plenty of scope for mobile storage.
The cantilevered C-frame benching system installed in both laboratories provides stable worktop support, independent of the under-bench storage units. Engineered to accommodate uneven flooring, the C-frame guarantees a level and dependable workspace. Mobile storage cabinets can be repositioned, allowing for easy reconfiguration and maximum flexibility within the lab environment.
Constructed from 50mm x 25mm x 12swg fully welded steel tubing, the durable C-frame leg support is reinforced with angled front and rear bracing rails, making it adaptable to meet specific load requirements. Finished with a chemically resistant epoxy powder coating, the system is easy to clean and highly resistant to wear and impact.
Featured products
Trespa Toplab Base was selected for work surfaces, offering an ideal solution for high-traffic areas that require regular cleaning, and superior impact resistance.
For efficient storage reagent shelving provides the smart storage solution. Keeping work surfaces clear of clutter, by organising commonly used items for a streamlined workflow.
Biosafety cabinets located in the extraction lab, are of great importance in handling biohazards in COVID-19 testing facilities. The direction and velocity of the airflow inside the biosafety cabinet create an air barrier between the specimen and the operator, minimizing the risk of exposure to hazardous bioaerosols.
The dedicated open office and breakout area provide flexible desk space
AlphaBiolabs new state-of-the-art laboratories feature adaptable, scalable furniture designed to create a dynamic workspace that attracts and retains top talent, both now and in the future.
Innova delivered the project ahead of schedule and within budget, successfully navigating the challenges of a tight deadline and ongoing lockdown restrictions. Our flexible approach and commitment to excellence resulted in cost-effective, high-quality interior solutions that surpassed client expectations. AlphaBiolabs has since invited us back to collaborate on additional lab installations, an exciting continuation of a successful partnership.
