The brief

The key objective was to create modern, high-quality science laboratories and preparation rooms that would inspire teachers and provide students with the tools needed to excel in STEM subjects.
Collaborating closely with key stakeholders at the college, interior specialists Innova successfully designed nine state-of-the-art custom-built science laboratories, each tailored to support various scientific disciplines and innovative teaching methodologies.
In addition to the laboratories, three dedicated preparation rooms were also developed, providing essential support for laboratory activities. These preparation rooms are equipped with modern facilities to ensure that educators and students have the resources they need to conduct experiments and research efficiently
A part-turnkey solution was delivered, managing everything from the design, manufacture, and installation of furniture to the second-fix M&E (mechanical and electrical) and utilities.
We are confident that the new facility will inspire young people to study STEM subjects with us, which is a vital part of the local plan for generating wealth and opportunity.

The solution

Working closely with the team at Barton Peveril, versatility and functionality were identified as a huge priority.
To meet this need, Innova designed and installed flexible learning environments that incorporate great circulation space and a cleverly designed layout so they work both as inspiring classrooms and practical laboratories. With services located on the front face of the units, the layout ensures students have sufficient room for both practical and theory and are able to switch quickly between the two.
Space and storage were also a key consideration So to seamlessly integrate teaching resources such as whiteboards and screens, Innova’s teacher walls were installed along with open shelving for books and bags.
The large, open-plan preparation rooms offer ample space for lesson preparation and storage, providing a practical and efficient environment for staff. A central preparation desk ensures that technicians have a clutter-free area to organise and set up practical sessions.
Velstone worktops were chosen for their durability and resistance to harsh chemicals used in further education, ensuring the labs remain functional and inspiring for years to come.

Barton Peveril Sixth Form College believes that these state-of-the-art facilities will attract more students to study STEM subjects and prepare them for successful careers in their chosen fields. The new laboratories will enhance the educational experience while fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. Through hands-on experiments and challenging coursework, students will develop the essential skills necessary for their future academic and professional success.
The college is committed to preparing its students for the demands of a rapidly evolving job market, ensuring they are well-equipped to succeed in their chosen fields. With these new resources, Barton Peveril is taking significant steps toward nurturing the next generation of innovators and leaders in STEM.
