The goal was to initially plan functional, adaptable spaces tailored to the needs of Key Stage 3 and 4 students, ensuring they support a diverse range of learners and maximise the potential of these practical learning environments.

The solution
Designing interiors for students with special educational needs (SEN) presents unique challenges, requiring thoughtful planning and the integration of specialised features that go beyond those found in traditional school designs.
Key elements considered by Innova’s designers to ensure user-centric spaces included:
• Circulation: Designing an accessible classroom focused on clear layouts, wheelchair-friendly features, and thoughtful details like user-friendly door handles and accessible escape routes. Circulation pathways were optimised to shorten travel distances and provide multiple routes, fostering an inclusive and efficient environment.
• Safety and security: The classrooms were designed with clear sightlines throughout to enhance classroom management, ensure safety, and maintain security. Emergency isolation switches for gas and power were located at the entry door. To enhance safety, all furniture was manufactured with rounded edges to prevent injuries from sharp corners.
• Flexibility and adaptability: Height adjustable workstations with open leg space ensure wheelchair accessibility, fostering inclusive interaction. Accessible storage units further support students with mobility challenges.
• Multi-Sensory awareness: SEN design took into account lighting, acoustics, textures, and other classroom stimuli, recognising their potential to enhance or hinder students’ learning experiences and comfort.
Each room was developed to accommodate individual work, group activities, or one-on-one assistance. The smaller class sizes provided ample space for movement, enabling flexible learning opportunities.
The learning facilities at New Forest School offer an exceptional experience, featuring specialised classrooms, two farms, and an outdoor learning centre that enhance the curriculum and promote personal development.
