The college embarked on a major £2 million-plus refurbishment project to upgrade its science facilities, reflecting its ongoing commitment to enhancing the infrastructure at its Rochdale and Middleton campuses.
This significant investment aimed to create state-of-the-art learning environments, supporting the delivery of high-quality education and fostering innovation in science and related disciplines.

The brief
As part of a capital renewal program funded by the Skills Funding Agency (Enhanced Renewal Grant 3), the college planned to modernise its outdated science facilities. Originally installed in the 1990s, the existing laboratories lacked the space, storage, and inspiration needed to effectively support students’ learning needs.
Collaborating closely with the college, Innova provided a comprehensive turnkey solution, covering the design, manufacture, and installation of all furniture, as well as M&E works and flooring. The goal was to transform the facilities into contemporary, engaging spaces that would distinguish Hopwood Hall from other colleges in the region.
Innova's expertise in the education sector allowed them to complete the project during term time with minimal disruption to teaching and learning. The result is a facility that will provide significant benefits to both the students and the college for years to come.

The solution
Innova successfully secured and delivered a £2.2 million tender to design and refurbish key teaching spaces essential to the Life Sciences curriculum. The project encompassed the transformation of four science laboratories and a prep room in the Wardle Building. Despite challenges related to programme timelines and space planning, Innova’s icutting-edge designs maximised functionality, revitalising each interior.
The refurbishment was executed as a rolling programme during term time, ensuring lessons continued without disruption. Innova’s unique “hot corners” design maximised space for both practical and theoretical work, while inspirational teacher walls and demonstration benches incorporated interactive whiteboards and extensive storage to accommodate books and equipment.

Each laboratory featured a distinct color scheme—ranging from ice blue to monochrome and metallic greens—to foster engagement and create dynamic learning environments.
